Taking advantage of a unique location in “Serra da Arrábida” and the richness of the limestone and marl lode existing in that Portuguese region, where there was already exploration of materials since the 18th century, a cement factory was set up in 1904.
Almost three decades later, due to the merger of two companies operating in the same region, Secil — Companhia Geral de Cal e Cimento — was born in 1930. Since the 1930s, many changes have taken place.
In addition to the inevitable technological changes and the awakening of an environmental conscience, Semapa acquired 51% of Secil’s capital and 100% of CMP — Cimentos Maceira e Pataias, in 1994, one of the main milestones in the history of the company. In 2011 Semapa became the holder of the entire capital of Secil.
